Detroit Fanfare Comic Con was this past weekend, October 25th-27th, 2013 at the Adoba Hotel in Dearborn, MI. We popped in a little bit every day and you can find our photos here on our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheBestofDetroit
This is the 4th year of Fanfare and it’s grown every year. Being behind the scenes of this Comic Book Convention gives us a good look at how much work goes into making it a great event. There are hundreds of volunteers, dozens of staff, and the promoters of this event, Tony Miello, Gary Reed, and Dennis Barger, make it all happen. Now add the comic book creators, the comic book stores, the vendors, the talent and the celebrities. This years highlights were Tyler Mane, Derek M
eads, Renae Geerlings who had an exclusive showing of their new movie Compound Fracture.
Saturday was a jam packed day of fun. Speed painter Dave Santia amazed attendees with his rock and roll style of painting and twirling until a picture materializes before your eyes. Then there was a silent auction, jugglers, a real live mermaid in the
pool that guests could swim with, Costume contests, Cosplayers, Panels, Workshops, Detroit Lions’ Israel Idonije, a live showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the official convention party with DJ Dock. This doesn’t even begin to cover the amazingly talented comic book, publishers, writers, and illustrators.
Sunday was kids day, which means kids get in free and there are dozens of activities for them such as free trick or treating at participating tables and booths. There was princess training, a Monster High Ice Cream Social and of course the very cool comics!
There was very little negative to report so we will skip that and just say that Fanfare makes a big effort to improve every year and make it an experience that they themselves would like to attend. We can’t wait for next year.
